Chocolate Can Deliver Long-Term Health Benefits

8/17/2010

When it comes to saving money on life insurance, some people may find that something as basic as enjoying chocolate once or twice a week can be of use.

This is because medical professionals have long advised people that moderate consumption of chocolate delivers flavonoids and antioxidants that are credited with boosting heart health and helping people avoid cancer.

However, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in Boston reminds people on their website that not just any type of chocolate will deliver health benefits. For example, BIDMC points out that darker chocolate with at least 60 percent cocoa solids tends to be higher in flavonoids, and in turn, health benefits. Also, white chocolate is said to lack the health benefits of its darker counterparts.

Of course, excessive chocolate consumption can also contribute to other problems such as obesity, which can give rise to numerous health problems and higher life insurance costs in its own right.

"Chocolate can carry substantial amounts of calories, fat and sugar, so moderation is key," said Dr. Kenneth Mukamal, a researcher at BIDMC. "While small quantities of chocolate are a healthy alternative for dessert, individuals with weight issues should use caution."
