Be Prepared for Summer Storms

8/18/2010

This summer has brought unusually hot weather to many parts of the country, and one of the effects has been a higher risk for tornadoes in places that may not have otherwise had such concerns in the past.

Even with tornado season largely in its later stages, significant parts of the country are also about to go through another Atlantic hurricane season. From a home insurance perspective, people who take the time to do some preparations may be able to save some time and effort later.

The Pennsylvania Insurance Department recently offered homeowners some insurance-related tips that could be of particular use after damage from a storm. By investing in various storm-resistant features for their home, insurance customers can also often get a discount on premiums.

For example, it's advisable to make temporary repairs to a structure if it will prevent further damage. Before doing so however, a homeowner should photograph and list the damages, and save any receipts associated with the repairs. It's also important to contact one's home insurance company as soon as possible to file a claim.

The department also advises homeowners not to get permanent repairs made until after their insurance company has inspected the damage and reached an agreement with them on the payout.
