Lower Health Insurance Premiums Can Start With a Good Diet

8/19/2010

Obesity has become a growing public health problem in recent years, and its effects can be seen in areas ranging from health insurance premiums to a greater public emphasis on physical activity.

Unfortunately, not everyone has easy access to healthy food, which can contribute to an increased incidence of serious health problems. Among these conditions are diabetes and heart disease.

Recent media reports have noted that in New England, healthcare professionals have found a new way to try to promote a healthy diet - especially among disadvantaged segments of the population.

According to a recent Associated Press report, healthcare facilities in Maine and Massachusetts have been offering $1 vouchers to low-income families in an effort to help them buy healthy and locally-grown produce.

The nonprofit group behind the effort, Wholesome Wave, will also check up on the health data of participants, including their blood sugar levels and body mass index. Overall, those who want to control the cost of their health insurance premiums and enjoy good health for life can get started simply by eating more fruits and vegetables.
